The award ceremonies for the "2024 Asia-Pacific and Taiwan Sustainability Action Award" and the "8th Taipei Golden Eagle Microfilm Festival" were recently held, where Cheng Shiu University of Science and Technology won the "TSAA Taiwan Sustainability Action Award" alongside six major awards at the "Taipei Golden Eagle Microfilm Festival." This recognition highlights the university’s significant achievements in promoting sustainable development and university social responsibility. Among these, the "Empowering New Residents, Nurturing Cijin's Future" project was especially notable, winning the Gold Award in the sustainability category.
The "4th TSAA Taiwan Sustainability Action Award" and the "8th Taipei Golden Eagle Microfilm Festival," hosted by the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy, were held alongside the 2024 Asia-Pacific Sustainability Expo at the Taipei World Trade Center from August 8 to 9. These events aim to recognize outstanding contributions by organizations, companies, and educational institutions towards achieving the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Cheng Shiu University is dedicated to its vision of "building a sustainable campus and fostering prosperous, sustainable local communities," with a core focus on innovation and practical application. The university leverages industry and campus resources to cultivate talent in the field of sustainability, equipping them with social responsibility and innovative practical skills. In 2024, the "Empowering New Residents, Nurturing Cijin's Future" project helped new residents in Kaohsiung's Cijin District develop entrepreneurship and employment skills through diverse strategies, enabling them to thrive in Taiwan. This effort earned the Gold Award in the SDG 1 category for "No Poverty."
The "Banana Pride: Innovative Collaborative Production Model in Qishan" project formed the "Spoonbill Youth Task Force," which has been working long-term in the Qishan and Shanlin regions of Kaohsiung. This project established "Qishan School" as a local learning base through the "Peer Spoonbill" program, embodying the values of SDG 4 "Quality Education," and received the Silver Award in this sustainability category.
The "Xinpi Fiberland: Revitalizing Xinpi Township" project introduced blockchain technology into the orchards of Xinpi Township. Faculty and students from Cheng Shiu University’s Department of Hospitality Management assisted in the development of the local specialty "Phoenix Cake," creating sustainable value for small farmers and industries. This project, under the "Xinpi Regeneration, Sustainable Blueprint" initiative, won the Silver Award for SDG 12 "Responsible Consumption and Production."
In its first participation in the "Taipei Golden Eagle Microfilm Festival," Cheng Shiu University garnered two Silver and one Bronze Awards in the "Sustainable Microfilm" category. The awarded films, "True Love in Taoyuan," "Rebirth in Xinpi: The Birth of Phoenix Cake," and "Learning in Qishan: The Qishan School," aim to illustrate local needs and the transformative impact of the university’s involvement in University Social Responsibility (USR) initiatives. Through the perspectives of faculty, students, and local residents, the films showcase the beauty of the region while inspiring participation in sustainability and local revitalization.
Cheng Shiu University President Gong Rui-Zhang remarked, "These accolades are the highest recognition of the efforts made by our faculty, students, and local partners in promoting sustainability. We will continue to advance our sustainable development and social practice initiatives, deepening local engagement year by year, sharing resources, and expanding the impact of our efforts. Our goal is to foster inclusive partnerships and bring further positive change and progress to the local community."
