The "2024 Indonesian Overseas Chinese Students Study Abroad Counseling Program," hosted by Cheng Shiu University of Science and Technology, provided an exceptional opportunity for Indonesian overseas Chinese students. The program not only introduced them to Taiwan's educational system but also allowed for an in-depth exploration of Taiwan's natural landscapes and cultural diversity. Through a series of outdoor educational and cultural immersion activities, the students significantly improved their Chinese language proficiency while engaging with Taiwan's indigenous culture and local distinctiveness.
Indonesian Overseas Chinese Students’ Exploration of Taiwan’s Indigenous Culture and Natural Landscapes
To provide a comprehensive understanding of Taiwan, Cheng Shiu University organized a diverse cultural experience tour that allowed students to explore Taiwan's natural and cultural heritage beyond the classroom. The students visited key sites such as Taitung’s Chulu Ranch, the International Hot Air Balloon Festival, Zhiben Hot Springs, and the Beinan Indigenous Cultural Park. These excursions left a lasting impression of Taiwan’s natural beauty while offering students a meaningful engagement with the richness of indigenous culture.
At the Beinan Indigenous Cultural Park, the students explored Taiwan's indigenous history and cultural heritage. The display of numerous archaeological artifacts offered insights into Taiwan's historical development. Additionally, sampling traditional indigenous cuisine was a highlight of the cultural tour, with many students noting that the experience broadened their perspectives and deepened their appreciation for Taiwan's culinary culture.
Taiwan’s Scenic Attractions: From Hot Air Balloons to Hot Springs
The natural beauty of Taitung left an indelible mark on the students. Despite poor weather conditions during the International Hot Air Balloon Festival, the students were still captivated by the unique balloon designs. Visits to Chulu Ranch, with its charming animals and fresh dairy products, as well as the Zhiben Hot Springs Hotel, provided a comprehensive introduction to Taiwan’s distinctive cultural and recreational sites, creating a sense of excitement and novelty among the Indonesian students.
Cycling through the scenic Seaside Park along the East Coast also became a cherished memory of their time in Taiwan. These activities not only offered relaxation but also fostered a sense of connection with Taiwan's hospitable and welcoming environment.
Chinese Language Development and Future Prospects
In addition to cultural enrichment, one of the central aims of the Indo Counseling Program was to enhance the students' Chinese language skills. After two months of intensive language training, the students showed significant progress. Cheng Shiu University President Gong Ruizhang remarked on their rapid advancement and affirmed that they are well-prepared for the academic challenges of university life.
At the graduation ceremony, Zhang Wenhua, Deputy Director of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission's Overseas Student Office, awarded the students certificates of completion and encouraged them to make the most of their time in Taiwan. He urged them to leverage their improved Chinese language skills and immerse themselves in Taiwanese culture, thereby building a strong foundation for their future academic and professional careers.
Cultural and Natural Experiences in Taiwan: A Lasting Impact on Overseas Chinese Students
This cultural journey, integral to the Indo Counseling Program, not only facilitated the enhancement of Chinese language skills but also offered a valuable opportunity to experience Taiwanese culture deeply. Through the exploration of Taiwan’s natural landscapes and indigenous traditions, the students acquired both knowledge and practical skills while developing a lasting connection to Taiwan. Their experiences will become an enduring memory, providing them with additional motivation and confidence as they embark on their academic careers.
