Community and Social Services for Disadvantaged Groups and Rural Areas

 

Volunteer Service Clubs 

To foster sustainable action and practical skills among students, the university actively encourages participation in social service-oriented clubs. These include the Youth Service Volunteer Group, Environmental Pioneer Team, Tzu Chi Collegiate Youth Association, Traffic Safety Service Club, Friendly Service Club, Micro-Light Volunteer Group, International Buddy Club, and Public Welfare Leadership Club. These clubs focus on serving both on-campus and in the broader community, promoting a sense of service among students. In 2023, these clubs organized various activities related to sustainability and social issues, addressing topics such as environmental education, gender equality, energy conservation, anti-drug education, climate action, and marine conservation.

For example, the "Youth Service Volunteer Group" focuses on advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly "SDG 4: Quality Education" and "SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities." Students in this group volunteer as after-school tutors at community family service centers for disadvantaged children and lead rehabilitation and recreational activities for the elderly at dementia-friendly centers, thereby providing inclusive educational opportunities and promoting community inclusivity and sustainability.

Digital Learning Partner Program

The university’s Digital Learning Partner Program, supported by faculty and students from various departments and the Teacher Education Center, operates under the philosophy of "life accompanies life, and life teaches life." This program provides remote tutoring and mentorship to primary and secondary students ("junior partners") to enhance their academic performance. In 2023, the program served schools in Kaohsiung, including Wenxian Elementary School and Hunei Junior High School in Hunei District, Taoyuan Elementary School and Zhangshan Elementary School in Taoyuan District, Xinwei Elementary School and Xinfeng Elementary School in Liugui District, and Neimen Junior High School in Neimen District. The program offers personalized, engaging, and interactive learning experiences tailored to the needs of each junior partner, incorporating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), current events, and career exploration. Since taking on this program in 2012, the university has served over 1,000 students in rural areas and has received the Ministry of Education’s "Outstanding University Partner" and "Outstanding Class Advisor" awards for nine consecutive years.

Dream Fulfillment Social Contribution Program 

Organized by the university's Care and Counseling Center, this program offers professional courses and training for special education students, aiming to provide opportunities for self-expression and to support the discovery and development of their personal potential. The program also integrates resources from the public, social welfare organizations, and the university to encourage students to engage in community service beyond the campus. This approach extends positive influence and care to the community and social welfare institutions. Through their participation in social service, students not only contribute to others but also discover their self-worth, realize their potential, and demonstrate the responsibilities and spirit of active citizenship.

	12th Anniversary of Huashan Niaosong Station: Collaborating with Cheng Shiu to Support the Elderly	Huashan Foundation Niaosong Station, Private Buddhist Jinjue Orphanage, Fengshan District Child and Youth Community Care Center	8	Dream Workshop students held a handmade dessert charity sale, raising $14,000, which was donated entirely to the Cheng Shiu Benevolent Merit Association.
2023	Turning Small Lights into Seeds of Hope: Xinyi Clubhouse Space Renovation	Huashan Foundation Niaosong Station, Fengshan District Child and Youth Community Care Center, Xinyi Clubhouse for Community Mental Disability Services	10	Through the collective efforts of faculty and students, the Dream Workshop assisted in renovating the Xinyi Clubhouse for community mental disability services. They also raised funds to purchase a water heater and a bed set for disadvantaged elderly residents living alone in the Niaosong area. At the end of the term, the university president donated $8,000 each to the Huashan Niaosong Station and the Cheng Shiu Benevolent Merit Association from the workshop's proceeds.

Incubation Center: Resident Companies and Support Services 

The university's Incubation Center is dedicated to nurturing and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with a focus on technological innovation. The center primarily targets innovative applications in the "electronic information and green energy/environmental protection" sectors. Through a systematic industry-academia collaboration, the center effectively integrates the university’s strengths in business, management, engineering technology, technology promotion, and information. It provides resident companies with a wide range of consulting services, including support for technological innovation and R&D, business services, management training, capital investment, and technical assistance. The aim is to guide newly established SMEs toward successful entrepreneurship and to assist in the development and commercialization of innovative technological products.

From 2016 to 2023, the Incubation Center has nurtured a total of 51 companies across diverse industries, including business consulting services, computer software services, environmental sanitation and pollution control services, product design, and more. In 2023, 10 companies with physical locations and 15 companies utilizing shared workspace were added.

Entrepreneurship Resources Lectures	On May 11, 2023, co-hosted a lecture with the Chinese Association for Incubation Development, involving private organizations to gain deeper insights into trends and developments in the startup ecosystem. A total of 21 faculty members and 228 students participated. On October 26, 2023, hosted the 2023 Entrepreneurship Resources Lecture, featuring a keynote speech by Lu Xiangrui, Director of Taiwan Angel International Investment Company. A total of 143 faculty members and students attended.
Startup Base	Site Visit: On November 4, 2023, conducted a site visit to the PINWAY Startup Base at the Kaohsiung City Government Youth Bureau. A total of 38 faculty members and students participated, experiencing the startup environment and atmosphere, which inspired new entrepreneurial thinking and strengthened entrepreneurial ambition and opportunities.
