Today (May 28), the "Industry-Academia Collaboration for Overseas Chinese Students: Technical and Vocational Education Meeting" was formally held at Cheng Shiu University of Science and Technology.

The meeting focused on in-depth discussions on how to effectively recruit, develop, and retain talent, aiming to encourage more overseas Chinese graduates to stay in Taiwan for their careers.

Cheng Shiu University President Gong Rui-Zhang noted that after returning to their home countries, overseas Chinese students often become key members of alumni associations, providing strong support for Taiwan. In an era of declining birth rates, these students play a crucial role in meeting corporate talent needs.

Many attending professors from technological universities expressed a desire for the tech industry to increase its hiring of overseas Chinese students.

However, they also highlighted that long working hours and frequent overtime often lead to working conditions that conflict with existing regulations. They hope that relevant laws can be moderately adjusted to better attract and retain overseas Chinese talent.

Wang Yi-Ru, Director of the Overseas Chinese Student Affairs Division at the Overseas Community Affairs Council, responded that it is difficult to revise legal regulations in the short term and advised overseas Chinese students to avoid overtime or part-time work outside of internships to prevent legal violations.

The conference underscored the importance of industry-academia collaboration, especially in tapping into the potential of international talent. Through joint efforts between universities and businesses, the retention of overseas Chinese students in Taiwan is expected to increase, strengthening Taiwan’s competitive position globally.

Participants at the meeting not only gained insight into the challenges overseas Chinese students face while working in Taiwan, but also discussed potential solutions. It is hoped that more overseas Chinese students will find suitable development opportunities in Taiwan, contributing new energy to the nation’s economic and social development.
