“United for Cijin – Youth in Action” Project: From Fieldwork to Family Fun at the Mud Festival

On October 5 and 6, the Crested Ibis Youth Service Team from Cheng Shiu University participated in a two-day, one-night immersion learning activity in the Shanlin and Cishan districts of Kaohsiung, as part of the “United for Cijin – Youth in Action” (Phase I) initiative. The program encouraged students to step outside the classroom and engage in hands-on field exploration and ecological education, strengthening their connection to environmental conservation.

First Steps Toward the Land: Field Exploration Along the Tomsen Trail

The journey began with a field survey at the historic Tomsen Trail in Shanlin. Led by Mr. Kuo, director of the New Homeland Foundation of Kaohsiung, students were guided through the region’s natural landscapes and forest ecosystems. Through in-depth interpretation, they gained insight into the importance of ecological protection and learned basic survival and outdoor skills. This direct experience with nature instilled a deeper appreciation for the environment and emphasized the shared responsibility of conservation while showcasing the trail’s natural beauty.

Community Service in Early Childhood Education: Family Fun at the Yuanfu Mud Festival

As part of the 5th Annual Yuanfu Community “Mud Festival 2024”, the Cheng Shiu student team designed family-friendly ball games and activities to encourage parent-child interaction. These events fostered stronger family bonds and invited children to disconnect from digital screens and reconnect with soil, play, and the outdoors. The Mud Festival offered more than just fun—it became a meaningful opportunity to experience the land through play.

A Journey Rooted in Learning and Love for Nature

Through this initiative, members of the Crested Ibis Youth Service Team not only acquired knowledge in ecological preservation, but also experienced the joy of living in harmony with nature through immersive community engagement. Whether navigating the trails of Tomsen or sharing laughter in the mud of Yuanfu, these activities drew children and families closer to the land.

Looking ahead, these youth will carry forward their respect and affection for the environment, continuing to contribute to both ecological conservation and early childhood community service with renewed passion and insight.
