Cheng Shiu University Wins Consecutive "2024 Taiwan Sustainable University Awards" Gold Award for Sustainability Report
Amid the global push for sustainable development, Cheng Shiu University (CSU) has achieved remarkable results through concrete actions. At the "2024 Taiwan Sustainable University Awards" ceremony, hosted by the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy (TAISE) on November 20 at the Grand Hotel Taipei, CSU once again stood out among competitors, earning the Gold Award for its Sustainability Report. This recognition underscores CSU’s strength and exceptional achievements in sustainable management and social responsibility.
Comprehensive Sustainability Development: Governance and Campus
CSU envisions creating a sustainable campus that fosters a better quality of life in local communities, focusing on four pillars of sustainability: education, economy, culture, and environment. Aligning its institutional goals of "teaching excellence, industry-academia collaboration, and sustainable development" with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), CSU has embedded sustainability into its strategic planning.
In particular, CSU established Taiwan’s only Research Center for Environmental Toxins and Emerging Contaminants among higher education institutions, demonstrating its commitment to environmental sustainability research. Since 2023, the university has initiated greenhouse gas inventories and implemented multiple energy-saving measures, including upgrading to high-efficiency energy equipment and innovative building facilities. CSU has also increased its renewable energy usage, contributing to Taiwan’s goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Consecutive Gold Awards: A Testament to Excellence
CSU President Kung Jui-chang stated, "Winning the Gold Award for two consecutive years represents the highest recognition of CSU's efforts in sustainability. Through education and action, we strive to advance both campus and societal sustainability while enhancing our international influence. Moving forward, we will deepen our sustainability initiatives to create a more inclusive campus and social environment."
Looking ahead, CSU aims to exceed its sustainability benchmarks by fostering stronger collaborations with governments, enterprises, and communities. Leveraging its influence, CSU seeks to promote shared development both locally and internationally.
Model for Social Responsibility through USR
CSU’s University Social Responsibility (USR) program has become a model of shared prosperity in society, focusing on 18 practice sites across the Kaohsiung-Pingtung region. The program engages students in community building and regional revitalization, earning widespread acclaim and multiple awards.
In 2024, CSU received the Local Integration Model Award at the "5th Global Views USR University Social Responsibility Awards" and won one gold and two silver awards at the 4th TSAA Taiwan Sustainability Action Awards. Additionally, CSU’s debut in the "Taipei Golden Eagle Microfilm Festival" garnered two silver and one bronze awards, showcasing the university’s excellence in promoting sustainability and fulfilling social responsibilities.
These achievements highlight CSU’s unwavering commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles and its relentless pursuit of local engagement and cultural enrichment. Through its innovative approach and community focus, CSU continues to set a benchmark for sustainability in higher education.
