Cheng Shiu University Creates a Golden Highlight in Moral Education and Wins Ministry of Education's Moral Education Model School Award
By integrating sustainability, diversity, and goodness into campus culture and practicing these values, Cheng Shiu University (CSU) has deeply ingrained the seeds of moral education in the hearts of faculty and students. The university was honored as a Moral Education Model School by Taiwan's Ministry of Education (MOE), one of only four higher education institutions nationwide to receive this recognition. During the award ceremony in Taipei, Dean of Student Affairs Lin Shu-yun expressed gratitude, emphasizing that CSU's administrative and academic units are fully committed to embedding moral education and its core values into students' daily lives.
To encourage and share experiences from schools with distinctive approaches to moral education, the MOE recently hosted the "2024 Moral Education Model Schools Observation and Recognition Conference" at the National Central Library. A total of 30 exemplary schools were recognized for shaping a culture of high-quality moral education.
Deep Roots in Moral Education
CSU's commitment to moral education is well established. Following its recognitions as an outstanding school in moral education in the 2009 academic year and as a model school in 2012, 2016, and 2020, CSU has once again received the MOE’s accolade in 2024. Dean Lin Shu-yun represented CSU to accept the award at the National Central Library.
The university's name reflects the founding principles of "rectifying the mind" and "cultivating oneself" from The Great Learning of Confucian philosophy. CSU's educational mission aims to nurture students as holistic individuals equipped with both professional skills and moral character. Building upon its 2020 initiative, "Starting with the Heart," CSU has aligned its moral education framework with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The university has structured its efforts around three dimensions: Sustainability, Diversity, and Goodness, forming a comprehensive moral education strategy.
Three Pillars of Moral Education
Sustainability (S)
- Promoting democratic procedures and core values.
- Cultivating critical thinking and civic literacy.
- Integrating external resources for win-win collaborations.
- Strengthening relationships between faculty and students to enhance educational outcomes.
Diversity (D)
- Combining diverse informal and hidden curricula.
- Fostering harmonious environments that emphasize inclusivity and respect.
- Practicing holistic education through initiatives like health promotion and campus friendliness.
- Deepening artistic education as part of a well-rounded approach.
Goodness (G)
- Recognizing and rewarding students for cultivating good character.
- Encouraging peer-driven motivation and exemplary role models.
- Building a friendly campus environment and integrating goodness into campus culture.
- Demonstrating these values through volunteer service and practical actions.
With its holistic approach to moral education, CSU continues to cultivate a culture that aligns professional competence with ethical excellence, ensuring that its students become well-rounded, socially responsible individuals.
