From Dioxins to Cancer Cells: Cheng Shiu University Advances Sustainability in Southeast Asia Through Detection Technology
Nation’s Largest Testing Center Safeguards the Environment and Public Health
Cheng Shiu University’s Center for Environmental Toxicology and Emerging Contaminants—the largest and most comprehensive testing facility in Taiwan with a 167-member team—has been supported by the Ministry of Education’s “Higher Education Sprout Project” since 2018. The center focuses on emerging contaminant detection, environmental health risk assessment, food safety, and biomedical applications, becoming a national benchmark in this field.
The center conducts tests across a wide range of domains, from environmental samples such as air, water, and waste, to food safety, drug abuse detection, and doping control for athletes—spanning environmental protection, public health, and wellness.
Technology Moves South: Supporting Indonesia’s Environmental Transformation
Center Director Dr. Kuo-Ping Chang-Chien highlights the university’s proactive international collaborations across Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines. More than technology transfer, the initiative emphasizes capacity building through training and long-term partnership.
In Indonesia, where waste treatment remains in early stages, Cheng Shiu’s team is helping establish local testing capabilities for dioxins and heavy metals—demonstrating Taiwan’s commitment to technological ethics and global responsibility.
Nano & Biomedicine: Pioneering Early Cancer Detection
Looking ahead, the center is integrating nanotechnology and biomedical research in partnership with Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and Pingtung Veterans General Hospital. Through a new “cancer cell capture platform,” the team will detect urinary biomarkers for cancers of the urinary system—offering promising breakthroughs in early diagnosis.
This reflects Cheng Shiu University’s growing strength in interdisciplinary medical engineering and its role in advancing innovation and public health from a technical university perspective.
National Firsts: Certified for Microplastics Testing in Humans
The center has achieved several national milestones, including:
-
First institute certified by the Ministry of Environment for PFAS testing in drinking water
-
First in Taiwan to develop human microplastics testing using Pyro-GC-MS/MS technology
-
2023 academic-industry collaboration value: NT$253 million; technology transfer: NT$13.79 million
These achievements underscore the university’s leadership in sustainable innovation and social responsibility through academic, research, and industrial synergy.
From Technology to Impact: A Commitment to University Social Responsibility
Cheng Shiu’s environmental technologies go beyond the lab, actively addressing real-world needs, promoting international collaboration, and assisting developing regions in building foundational environmental systems.
“We’re not here just to test,” said Director Chang-Chien. “We use science and technology to make environments better—wherever help is needed. That is our commitment to the world.”
