Sustainability Efforts Continue to Flourish:
Cheng Shiu University Wins Three Major Honors at the 2025 Taiwan Sustainable University Awards

Cheng Shiu University (CSU) once again demonstrated its strong commitment to sustainability by winning three prestigious honors at the 2025 Taiwan Sustainable University Awards: the Outstanding Sustainable University Award, the Social Inclusion Leadership Award, and the Gold Award for Sustainability Reporting. These recognitions affirm the university’s long-term achievements in sustainable governance, educational innovation, and community engagement.

The awards ceremony, held on November 26, gathered sustainability teams from universities across Taiwan. CSU stood out with its exceptional performance. President Rwei-Chang Kung emphasized, “Sustainability is not a slogan—it must be realized through concrete actions. CSU builds upon education to drive positive change in local communities and society.”

CSU has established “Teaching Excellence, Industry-Academia Leadership, and Sustainable Development” as its core direction, focusing particularly on SDG 4: Quality Education, and integrating SDGs into curriculum design, research, and campus operations.

Governance (G): Strengthening Institutional Transparency and Sustainable Leadership

The university has developed a robust governance structure by establishing the Committee for Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development and the Institutional Research Center. CSU also publishes its Sustainability Report and Social Responsibility Yearbook annually, ensuring transparency and responsible governance. From 2023 to 2025, CSU earned the Gold Award for Sustainability Reporting for three consecutive years, demonstrating its consistent leadership in sustainable university governance.

Academic Innovation & AI Empowerment: 3i Transformation Strategy

CSU’s “3i Empowerment Strategy (iSmart × iSDGs × AI)” integrates artificial intelligence into curriculum design and sustainability-related instruction, aligning learning with future workforce trends.
In 2024, 94.73% of all courses were aligned with the SDGs, and faculty published 158 research outputs across environmental protection, public health, and cultural preservation. The university also promotes cross-disciplinary learning and smart education to cultivate future-ready talents equipped with sustainability literacy and AI application skills.

Environmental Sustainability (E): Carbon Reduction, Energy Saving, and Green Procurement

CSU adopts the TCFD framework and ISO 14064-1 standards to implement a comprehensive carbon inventory system.
In 2024:

  • Total carbon emissions reached 7,357 tons, a 3.06% reduction from the previous year.

  • Renewable energy usage increased to 6.69%.

  • Green procurement exceeded NT$20 million, a 15.63% increase.

  • The university held 26 environmental awareness and energy-saving events, embedding sustainability into daily campus life and advancing toward the 2050 net-zero goal.

Social Inclusion (S): Equity, Access, and Lifelong Learning

Social inclusion is a defining strength of CSU. Under the strategy “Diverse Learning for Educational Sustainability,” the university implemented three flagship initiatives—Digital Education for Rural Communities, Learning Support for Disadvantaged Students, and Healthy Aging & Intergenerational Learning—earning the Social Inclusion Leadership Award.

Key achievements in 2024 include:

  • 50 digital education and rural learning activities

  • 10,725 instances of student aid supporting disadvantaged learners

  • 161 elderly health and intergenerational learning events, benefiting over 8,000 participants

A New Benchmark for Technical and Vocational Universities in Sustainability

President Kung noted that CSU’s three major awards demonstrate not only the university’s strong ESG integration and sustainable governance capacity but also highlight the evolving leadership of Taiwan’s technical and vocational universities in sustainability.
He reaffirmed CSU’s commitment to advancing the SDGs, realizing the vision of “building a sustainable campus and co-creating a better life for the local community,” and strengthening partnerships with government, industry, and communities to shape an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable future.
