Cheng Shiu University and Indonesia Join Hands to Launch a New Chapter in Environmental Sustainability

In response to the escalating global environmental challenges, Cheng Shiu University (CSU), led by Vice President Dr. Yen-I Lee, signed a formal Memorandum of Understanding in Jakarta with MUTU International, Indonesia’s largest private inspection and certification institution. Together, they announced the establishment of the Taiwan–Indonesia Joint Center for Environmental Toxicants and Emerging Pollutants, marking a milestone in bilateral collaboration and the internationalization of green technology.

At the signing ceremony, Mr. Arifin Lembaga, Chairman of MUTU, emphasized that the center is not only about technical cooperation but also embodies Indonesia’s vision for industrial upgrading and sustainable governance. He expressed his hopes that Taiwan’s higher education research capacity will help jointly shape future testing standards and innovative services.

Technology Transfer to Strengthen Indonesia’s Testing Capacity

The new center will focus on advanced detection and risk assessment of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and emerging contaminants. By leveraging CSU’s J.L. Center for Environmental Toxicants and Emerging Contaminants Research and its expertise in trace and ultra-trace analysis, MUTU will be equipped to build Indonesia’s leading environmental testing capabilities, advancing laboratory modernization, standardization, and localization.

Since 2022, MUTU has dispatched its laboratory directors and R&D teams to Taiwan for training. The establishment of this joint center signifies a complete cooperative framework—from educational training to on-the-ground technology implementation.

International Cooperation Upgraded: CSU Named Exclusive Testing Partner in Indonesia

The agreement officially recognizes MUTU International as CSU’s exclusive environmental testing partner in Indonesia. Moving forward, both institutions will jointly advance research, project collaboration, and academic exchange, fulfilling a “point-to-line, line-to-network” strategy for global cooperation.

In his remarks, Vice President Lee highlighted: “This is not merely a symbolic launch, but the beginning of a journey built on trust, openness, and responsibility.” He reaffirmed CSU’s commitment to expanding its Southbound cooperation network, positioning sustainability as the core of its academic output, and serving as an active contributor to environmental risk governance across Asia.

Higher Education’s Responsibility for a Sustainable Planet

CSU has long been committed to addressing environmental pollution issues. Its J.L. Center has earned domestic and international recognition for research spanning:

  • Environmental sample testing (air, water, and soil)

  • Food safety, emerging narcotics, and microplastic exposure in humans

  • Development of pyrolysis gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (Pyro-GC-MS-MS) detection technologies

This cross-border collaboration is not only a case of technological transfer, but also a concrete demonstration of higher education’s role in fulfilling its environmental responsibility and advancing the spirit of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
