CSU Takes Swift Action to Support Post-Disaster Home Repairs in Tainan’s Houbi District

When Tropical Storm Danas and the torrential rains of July 28 devastated the Yunlin–Chiayi–Tainan region, many homes in Houbi District, Tainan, were severely damaged. In response, the Ministry of Education (MOE) quickly launched a coordination mechanism to connect universities with affected households for reconstruction support. Out of ten successful matches, Cheng Shiu University (CSU) independently completed eight cases, demonstrating its strong sense of social responsibility and professional capability in times of crisis.

Post-Disaster Repairs Begin: Professional Teams On Site

The repair contract signing ceremony was held at the Houbi District Office, witnessed by representatives from MOE and the local government. Immediately after signing, construction teams began roof reconstruction and reinforcement work. Professor Hsin-Yi Wang, Chair of CSU’s Department of Civil Engineering, and faculty member Yu-Hsien Ho led professional crews to address residents’ most urgent needs. The sounds of hammers and drills filled the site, while residents’ anxious expressions gradually turned into smiles of relief.

Government and Academia Collaborate to Restore Homes

The repair sites were inspected by Executive Yuan Minister without Portfolio Jin-De Chen, MOE Deputy Director Chi-Kuang Lee, Tainan Deputy Director of Civil Affairs Ming-Hsi Wu, and Houbi District Chief Chih-Pin Lee. They expressed high praise for CSU’s timely and professional contributions. Deputy Director Lee stressed that CSU’s team played a vital role in helping both MOE and local residents confront the aftermath of the storm, becoming an essential force of support.

Alumni Ties and Professional Heritage Drive Action

Professor Wang explained that while residents initially had concerns about repair costs, trust grew after the first successful contract signing, allowing subsequent projects to move forward more smoothly. She remarked with emotion: “Over the past 60 years, CSU Civil Engineering has built not only professional expertise but also strong alumni bonds. These connections enabled us to complete eight repair projects in the shortest possible time.”

President’s Message: CSU as a Force for Social Stability

CSU President Jui-Chang Kung expressed gratitude to faculty and alumni for their dedication, encouraging the team to continue combining professional skills with humanistic care to meet societal needs. He emphasized: “CSU is not only an educational institution but also an important stabilizing force in society. We will continue to cooperate with government initiatives on post-disaster recovery, integrating academic and industry resources to provide long-term support for residents rebuilding their homes.”
