Cheng Shiu University Joins YouBike Carbon Reduction Program, Creating a New Low-Carbon Commuting Culture

Amid the global momentum toward net-zero emissions and sustainable transformation, university campuses are not only spaces for knowledge exchange, but also key platforms for climate action. In May 2025, Cheng Shiu University (CSU) officially joined the YouBike Carbon Reduction Account Program, transforming daily commuting into measurable and accumulative carbon reduction outcomes through a digital management platform—making every ride a small but meaningful step toward a better world.

Every Ride Counts: Turning Commuting into Climate Action

According to YouBike’s carbon reduction calculation standards, each ride that replaces the use of a private fuel-powered vehicle can reduce approximately 0.196 kg of CO₂e emissions. This is more than just a number—it represents a tangible contribution to climate action through individual behavior.

The system also provides data export functions, hierarchical management, and organizational dashboards, enabling the University to compile monthly, quarterly, and annual reports. These data can serve as valuable references for ESG governance and sustainability reporting.

Through the YouBike Carbon Reduction Account app, faculty and students can join CSU’s exclusive organizational group. By simply renting and completing rides, individual carbon reduction data are automatically recorded, while cumulative campus-wide results are visualized—making sustainability not just an abstract concept, but a visible and trackable achievement.

Enhanced Campus Mobility: Making Green Commuting More Accessible

To support green transportation, CSU has established two YouBike stations—one at the main entrance (near the Chengcing Road bus stop) and another near the side gate (Zhengxiu Road). These stations strengthen the connection between public transportation and shared bicycles.

With the future development of the Kaohsiung MRT Yellow Line, accessibility will be further enhanced, forming an integrated low-carbon commuting network. In addition, dedicated bicycle parking areas are available on campus, encouraging faculty and students to adopt the habit of “short trips without driving,” making green mobility part of everyday life.

Quarterly Rewards: Making Carbon Reduction Visible and Rewarding

Starting in 2026, YouBike will introduce the Campus Partner Incentive Program, offering ride vouchers based on quarterly carbon reduction achievements:

  • 1,000 kg CO₂e: NT$5,000 reward (100 vouchers × NT$50)
  • 2,000 kg CO₂e: NT$10,000 reward
  • 3,000 kg CO₂e: NT$15,000 reward
  • 5,000 kg CO₂e: NT$20,000 reward

With up to four reward cycles per year, this mechanism not only enhances participation but also transforms sustainability efforts into tangible incentives and measurable outcomes.

Reducing Congestion, Improving Health, Enhancing Air Quality

Promoting bicycle commuting helps alleviate traffic congestion during peak hours, improve air quality, and reduce noise pollution. For individuals, cycling also serves as a form of daily exercise, contributing to better physical health, mental well-being, and focus.

This initiative directly addresses key campus challenges, including:

  • Urban campus traffic congestion
  • High reliance on single-occupancy vehicles
  • The need for improved health and wellness among faculty and students

CSU has also implemented complementary low-carbon transportation measures, including electric scooters for official use, charging infrastructure in new construction projects, and encouraging the use of public transportation—supported by 23 bus routes with over 800 daily services. These strategies collectively contribute to building a more sustainable and accessible campus.

A Green Transition Starting with Everyday Commutes

CSU has long been committed to promoting smart carbon reduction, data-driven governance, and behavioral change. By joining the YouBike Carbon Reduction Account Program, the University is not only encouraging a shift in transportation choices, but also embedding sustainability into campus culture.

Through everyday commuting, CSU continues to take meaningful steps toward a greener future—demonstrating how small actions can lead to significant impact.
