Cheng Shiu University Partners with Niaosong Wetland to Promote Sustainable Development through Art, Technology, and Community Service

In an era when sustainable development and social inclusion have become global priorities, education serves not only as a means of knowledge transmission but also as a vital pathway for cultivating civic responsibility and practical action. Through its Special Education Resource Center, Cheng Shiu University has launched the Dream Fulfillment Social Service Program, integrating environmental education, ecological conservation, artistic creation, and digital technology. As part of the initiative, the University hosted the Wetland Revitalization Art Exhibition at the Hexi Corridor Outdoor Plaza on campus, showcasing students’ achievements in environmental sustainability and community engagement while highlighting the diverse talents and life values of students receiving special education support.

From Service Recipients to Service Providers: Cultivating Sustainable Citizenship

Cheng Shiu University has long been committed to diversity, inclusion, and social responsibility. Through the Dream Fulfillment Social Service Program, students are encouraged to step beyond the classroom and engage directly with communities through service-learning and environmental action.

President Jui-Chang Kung noted that participation in wetland conservation activities not only enhances students’ environmental awareness but also transforms them from recipients of support into active contributors to society. Throughout the process, students develop a stronger sense of responsibility, self-confidence, and achievement, fostering greater self-recognition and preparing them for future career development and lifelong learning.

President Kung further emphasized that every individual possesses unique talents and strengths. This exhibition provides an important platform for students to showcase their potential through artistic expression and environmental action while demonstrating care for nature, ecology, and life. The exhibition also reflects the University’s commitment to holistic education and sustainable talent development.

Protecting the Environment through Hands-On Wetland Conservation

To deepen students’ understanding of and responsibility toward the natural environment, the project partnered with the Kaohsiung Wild Bird Society. Under the guidance of Secretary-General Lin Kun-Hai, students visited Niaosong Wetland and participated in a variety of ecological conservation activities.

Students engaged in ecological observation, removal of invasive vines, maintenance of boardwalk pathways, and eradication of invasive apple snails. Through these hands-on experiences, they gained practical knowledge of ecosystem conservation while developing a stronger emotional connection to the land.

By adopting a service-learning approach, Cheng Shiu University seeks to help students understand the relationship between human activities and natural ecosystems, fostering values of environmental stewardship, resource conservation, and sustainable living.

Transforming Wetland Sediment into Sustainable Art

One of the exhibition’s highlights is the Wetland Ecological Crayon Project, jointly developed by students Tsai Yi-Chu, Chien Yu-Chen, and Lin Cai-Yu from the Department of Visual Communication Design.

The team discovered that large quantities of sediment removed from the Niaosong Wetland sedimentation pond were routinely treated as waste. They therefore explored ways to repurpose the material by drying and grinding the sediment into natural pigments, which were then developed into environmentally friendly crayons.

The project demonstrates students’ interdisciplinary integration and design innovation capabilities while embodying the principles of the circular economy and resource reutilization. It transforms environmental education from a conceptual discussion into a tangible practice and showcases the potential of sustainable design and green innovation.

Art as a Medium for Inclusion, Expression, and Understanding

Art serves as a powerful language for understanding the world and connecting people from diverse backgrounds.

The exhibition also features a series of artworks created by Visual Communication Design student Tsai Yu-An, inspired by wetland fish species. Through two-dimensional illustrations and three-dimensional compositions, the works vividly portray the richness and vitality of wetland ecosystems.

In addition, the “Star Artists” collection highlights the keen observational abilities and unique creative perspectives of students receiving special education support. Each artwork reflects the students’ thoughts and emotions regarding nature, ecology, and life, illustrating the values of diversity, inclusion, and mutual understanding fostered through artistic creation.

Through art education and community engagement, Cheng Shiu University empowers students to build confidence while encouraging society to recognize the capabilities and potential of individuals with diverse learning needs, helping to create a more inclusive and supportive environment.

Integrating Technology with Environmental Education

To expand the impact and accessibility of environmental education, the exhibition also incorporates expertise from the Office of Technology and Arts Development through the use of 360-degree panoramic photography technology. This effort resulted in the creation of a Virtual Tour of Niaosong Wetland.

Through immersive digital displays and an online guided tour platform, visitors can explore the ecological environment and conservation achievements of Niaosong Wetland without physically visiting the site.

This innovative application overcomes the limitations of time and space, broadening the reach of environmental education while demonstrating Cheng Shiu University’s commitment to promoting sustainable learning through digital technology. It also highlights the role of technology as an effective tool for environmental conservation and knowledge dissemination.

Advancing Sustainability through Education

Cheng Shiu University continues to advance University Social Responsibility (USR), service-learning initiatives, and sustainable development through interdisciplinary collaboration among special education, environmental conservation, artistic creation, and digital technology.

The Wetland Revitalization Art Exhibition not only showcases students’ outstanding achievements but also demonstrates the vital role of education in promoting environmental sustainability, social inclusion, and local revitalization. Looking ahead, Cheng Shiu University will continue collaborating with community partners to create a model of sustainable development that integrates ecological conservation, humanistic care, and technological innovation, generating lasting positive impacts on both society and the environment.
